Women In Marketing You Need To Know

July 23, 2017

Women In Marketing!!!

3 women I believe that are killing it in within the industry of marketing, branding and communications strategy. Personally, these are women I look up to and connect with. As we develop in our career it is important to have role models to look up to and attain inspiration from, to draw from and push you to keep going when the end goal seems so far away.

In this industry where I believe females get looked past on unless we are in your face and are demanding the room. I think recognition is needed because these ladies are pathing the way for us.

3 #WomenInMarkerting

Stephanie Horton

A personal favourite of mine! Stephanie is really a lady of her word as my mentor she has been instrumental in guiding me within my career personally. You never who you will meet on your flight. Yes, that’s where I first met Stephanie, on route to Miami for Art Basel walking through 1st class boarding I went over and said hi. When I got back to London I emailed her as soon as I landed and that was the beginning of it all. Always be ready because you never know who will meet in your life journey.

Stephanie Horton is a 20-year veteran of luxury fashion and marketing communications and an expert in global strategy! Stephanie has developed and executed creative marketing solutions for both domestic and international brands. Stephanie joined Farfetch from Shopbop in 2013, where she served as Head of Global Communications, oversaw the US and global communications strategy of the brand. Prior to Shopbop, Ms. Horton was Executive Director of Creative Services at Vogue and Director of Marketing at the New York Times.

Now moving into her next venture, she’s an amazing example of a black girl magic that has put a stamp of excellence with everything she has achieved. #MarketingGirlBoss.

Bozoma

July 11, 2016: Apple Music’s Marketing Executive Bozoma Saint John poses for a portrait at Apple Music Headquarters in Culver City, California.

A woman with purpose, power but most importantly passion.

I do not know Bozoma personally but I feel like I know her. Her rise to her current role, as Chief Brand Officer at Uber, is a testimony to hard work, perseverance, and focus. Take a snippet at her resume and why she is a #MarketingGirlBoss.

Bozoma diligently commenced her senior career at Pepsi at Chief Marketing Officer. Leading music festival-based marketing as head of the Music and Entertainment Marketing the division itself came from her suggestion that the company sponsor music festivals and award shows. What a mogul! She remained with the company for almost a decade before joining Beats Music in 2014, when Jimmy Iovine of Beats personally recruited Bozoma based on her experience in music marketing. From Pepsi Bozoma made her way to Apple and became the head of global consumer marketing for iTunes and Apple Music, captivating “passion” and persona from local and online audiences. Which is why you can see why Uber is in need of some Bozoma magic.

This is such a great example of sustaining longevity in a career and the benefits of what you sow in the early years of your career. I am personally not against jumping around different jobs while you find your feet but there is nothing more telling and rewarding than gaining sufficient time and experience.

Amber Pepper

Amber Pepper is someone I came across on Linkedin. As a budding marketer and comms geek, I was desperately was looking for women pioneering within the fashion and lifestyle industry, working for global brands within marketing. I came across Amber and emailed her straight away to introduce myself because that is what I personally do. I instantly was amazed felt connected to her journey as I hope to achieve such a career timeline.

Have you seen a lot more of Coach campaigns, recently? Well, Amber is a huge contribution to why we have. She is the Vice President of Marketing and Communications at Coach. Amber Pepper foresees overall marketing and public relations strategy of Coach’s business in Europe, as well as overseeing Coach’s European communications, digital and celebrity agencies. Previously, Amber was the managing director of Brower Lewis PRCo, at Farfetch as the Chief Marketing Officer and was Head of Marketing and Communications at Harrods.

This motivates me to keep working hard. Most importantly it’s not who you work for, it’s the work that you do that propels you to success!

See Now Buy Now – The New Blueprint For Luxury Brands?

June 7, 2017

Luxury brands are rewriting their creative and marketing approach with a new blue print.

Introducing-  ‘The See Now, Buy Bow’

Are long gone the days of purchasing items a season ahead or 4 months before the collection is released online or in-store? Well brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Tom Ford and Ralph Lauren seem to think so. As one of the first of many luxury brands to have implemented this new business sales approach, it seems we may be in the midst of a revolutionary time in the age of luxury commercial marketing, strategy and customer experience.

The see now, buy now strategy has been evident in the high street circuit for years now, but not in history for a renowned global brand just yet. As there have not been many case studies or long-term results to support this strategy shift.

See Now Buy Now

But lets really think about it, from a marketer perspective this makes sense!  The industry is finally playing catch-up with who their audience is. For year’s global brands with a huge corporate machine including the fundamental departments such as: production, design, marketing and sales etc. have now marched to the tune of their own drums and have failed to listen to the pattern of their evolving consumer, growing demographic and millennial savvy shoppers.

Luxury analyst Luca Solca contributed via NY Time on her thoughts on the current phase as an experimental mode, due to the lack of aggression in this strategy.

In my opinion, change is good and it is important in today’s market that fashion business’s take more risk, than standing still! We cannot hold onto what is and is not a marketing tool. It is our job and commitment to listen to what customer are asking for and as a fashion enthusiast and marketers to then provide customers with what they want and when they want it.

It doesn’t mean that all luxury brands should leave their current production and sales strategy and start from scratch. All I hope is that develop and improve on what is there. Brands such as Ralph Lauren and Tom Ford have, which highlights that change and innovation works when executed correctly leaving minimal risk of failure!

The Iconic Blazer – Maxa Mara Inspired!

June 3, 2017

The iconic Max Mara blazer or Zara? – Lets talk about it!

I have been quiet on the blog lately, sorry! May was a month of working on various projects that’s been taking up my time, which has been more of the behind the scenes work that I do such as, fashion marketing and PR work. I will be revealing more in my #LifeOfAMarketingGirl section next week. I know some of my followers have asking for me to share more about all of that, so I plan on sharing personal work stories for ya’ll!

Blazer Blazer

Lets talk about this jacket now, as it is a major staple piece that is going into my wardrobe!

Previously in one of my style post, I spoke about fast fashion and how I wasn’t really inspired by much as of late. Then last week I was scrolling on the Zara website (as you do) and saw this blazer and thought OMG my mum would love this. It reminds of one of my favourite brands Max Mara who are renowned for creating the most amazing, classic, iconic blazers.

Blazer

What I love most about this jacket is that you can wear it over and over again, in various styles. And it reminded me to get back on track and continue to shop for classics to build a staple piece wardrobe collection. Starting with luxe basics that are versatile through the season. Zara have a lot of chic blazers and jackets at the moment in many colours but red struck my attention because it was a bold red, that compliments what I already have in my wardrobe.

Blazer

I styled the blazer with exactly how I would like to wear it out for date night. Forever 21 lace bra-let and flared trousers from Zara. Completing for a classic, sexy and feminine look. I’m thinking to style the jacket on it’s own next with knee high boots!

Interviewing For A Marketing Job? – Lola Michaels Shares Her Expertise!

May 9, 2017

 Interviews, Interviews, Interviews….

Particularly in the creative industry, the interview process can be very vigorous. Never let that put you off – it is purposely designed that way to see if you can withstand the pressure. The creative industry is very rewarding, however working well under pressure is a vital skill to have if you want to pursue a career in this line of work. The process also tests your self-endurance, as it can often last for a course of three weeks, and even longer for them to deliver the final verdict.

What you can expect to experience within an interview process (this may vary):

An initial phone interview with HR
1st stage interview – Is usually with someone in a managerial position – share some knowledge regarding educational and career background and asked competency-based questions
2nd stage interview – You will meet with your poential manager and someone a bit more senior – asked to do a 10-15 minute presentation.

Within the #LifeOfAMarketingGirl posts, we want to give you positive tips and advice on how to conquer the interviewing process. More than anything else, it is truly a test of mental strength and is more about how you view yourself as a person.

Here are some key points to remember when interviewing:

See an interview as a conversation rather than a test

Often times, we believe that interviews are done to catch us out. Absolutely not! Start viewing it as a conversation and an opportunity to get to know your potential employer. Remember, as much as they need to decide whether they are a perfect fit for they company – you also need to know whether the job is right for you.

interview

You being seated in that room means you ARE good enough

Being called to come have an interview, means you have been shortlisted as one of the best candidates. By reminding yourself of that, that should allow to walk in the interview with the utmost confidence.

Don’t ever feel discouraged after an interview – keep going!

It is very important to not to feel discouraged straight after an interview. If you feel you could have done better, take those learnings and write them down. Prepare yourself to be better equipped for the next interviews you have lined up.

Live Your Best Life – Chronicles Of A Millenials Mind!

May 1, 2017

The goal is to live your best life. I repeat, the goal is to live your best life. Let me tell you why:

A few weeks since turning 26 I spent a few weeks in having so much fun. Enjoying my friends, love ones and just living life. Then randomly I had a moment, not just any moment. I had a mini-breakdown so to speak. I need to own my own home in two years. I need to be on ‘x’ amount of money by the end of the year. I need to have more freedom to achieve my dreams. The list goes on and on!…

live your best lifelive your best life

Then on day 2 of ‘Olivia’s self pity day’ lol anxiety had taking over mentally and physically. I couldn’t concentrate at all, I wanted to cry but had no specific reason. My mind was on overload with all the worry, doubt, fear, ANXIETY. You name it, I had it. It was awful. By the end of the day I was drained. Two days had gone by and I just moaned (well in my head), I let fear take over and rule my life for two whole days!

Then I had a moment where I just said to myself, you have wasted all this energy and look how far you have come ,NO WHERE. Then it hit me, what am I doing? Why am I letting this negative energy rule my mind? I have completely dismissed what I have achieved so far and what I am focused on. Then I saw this tweet and it was like an Oprah ‘AHA’ moment that happened to me. I read this quote which read: Don’t be a “only” if believer. Be a “even if” believer. Those words literally ran through my mind and body and swept that energy right away, that was drowning me for those two days. It really hit me, Why worry about the obstacle’s they will come but they will go. Just stay focused on what you can achieve on a day to day basis and LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE.

live your best life live your best life

The quote couldn’t be more right. Why spend time stressing and thinking about the negative when there is so much to be grateful for. It really hit home that it is the mind and I have the power to change what is wrong in my life right! You have the power. We all do, It’s our god given right. Since I flipped my thinking, it feels so good and feels so right. Life is short, so whatever you are doing in life enjoy it and if you are not, change your circumstances so that you can. Life did not come with a rule book, so do what is right for you! Don’t watch others, live your best life and most importantly seek the kingdom of god for guidance, he never will fail you!

live your best life

From Working For Wolford To Wolford Becoming Her Client – Meet Sidonie Goldman

April 23, 2017

#LifeOfAMarketingGirl Interview – Meet Sidonie Goldman

A PR and Marketing expert who left France 20 years ago for an internship that lead her to meet and work Joesph Ettedgui, then go on to head up Wolford EU marketing team and now has branched off to start her own agency!

I get to share with you how taking a leap of faith, can get you to the top! It doesn’t matter where you are from, what you believe is possible will be possible. Meet a dear friend and #BOSS in  her own right.

I get to share with you how taking a leap of faith, to start from the bottom! It doesn’t matter where you are from, what you believe is possible is possible. Meet a dear friend and #BOSS in  her own right.

What is your job role?

My job role is communicating with my clients on a very regular basis and reacting very quickly to what they need, planning and finding solutions based on ROI and ultimately increasing their T/O. It is also overlooking my small team and making sure we are all on the same page and working towards the same goal.

What does that entail?

I take care of my client’s needs daily. I do PR, Commercial Marketing and social for them. One day we do a photoshoot for a campaign or pitching a product to the press… It is really varied and this is what makes it so fun and interesting.

What big brands can you share that you have had the pleasure in working with?

I have worked with Joseph – working very closely with Mr Joseph Ettedgui himself, an incredibly inspirational man with a heart of gold. During this time, we were working with brands such as Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, Sophia Kokosalakis, Pucci, Missoni, Costume National.

Sidonie Goldman

I then worked with Wolford and had the chance to be involved in collaborations with brands such as Vivienne Westwood, Giorgio Armani, Karl Lagerfeld. One of the very exciting moment at Wolford was launching the social media platform with Twitter from the UK. I remember working already with a few bloggers, at the time in 2008 it was quiet new!

How did you get into the industry?

I left France 20 years ago. I left my job for a non-paid internship that gave me the opportunity to get a “foot in the door” and start in the fashion industry. It was only after a year doing parcel collections and coffees that I got my job at Joseph getting back to PR which was what I had studied.

What would you say is special about your job?

The incredible opportunities to meet truly interesting and inspirational people all the time… I have learnt so much…

As a marketer, what do you think is the gem to propel you to success

Hard work, having a good work ethic and remaining focused on the commerciality of each project.

 Sidonie Goldman

In the Industry do you look up to any other women in your field?

Most of the time I loved to hear what Jane Shepherdson had to say. I went to one of her talks, she was amazing and fearless with a very good entrepreneurship head on her shoulders.

I also have a friend Emma Sinclair, she is an amazing woman – the youngest in the UK to have IPO’d her company at 28 years old. She is a business mentor and a UN business ambassador. I always love being with her and listening to all her stories. She is incredibly strong and focused and is also great at introducing people to each other – a super woman!

What is the most rewarding campaign

When I was working for Wolford we were pushing a collection which was slightly different from what the brand was normally doing. It was a collection of very visual and sexy hosiery – not for everyone! I got in touch with Cheryl Cole’s stylist. Cheryl was then the new judge on the X-Factor and on a Sunday night during the semi-final and in front of 10 millions viewers, Cheryl introduced her new album and was wearing a pair of Wolford tights and a blazer.. and nothing else…!

It was a bit of a surreal moment – it was before social media so I was jumping up and down on my sofa screaming!!

The following day, Wolford sold out of the “Cheryl tights” on and off line and had to re-order 600 pairs for the UK.

One customer even came to one of the stores and asked to purchase 40 pairs for her hen night!!!

#GOALS !!

Wolford

Who was/is your greatest teacher?

I have a few!

I have learned so much about high fashion from Joseph.

My father taught me intuition, process and hard work, he is always pushing me out of my comfort zone.

My husband taught me business, he is incredibly good at numbers and I am not!! He is also very calm and pushes me to budget, forecast, business planning, he can “read” an Xcel file like a book, its amazing!  etc..

Also in luxury fashion/lifestyle, I always ask myself, would I buy this or would I be happy about the experience if I was the client? Attention to details is an absolute must and nothing should be rushed.

Most valuable lesson

Managing my time, prioritizing and knowing to delegate.

Last words:

My family again and again!

Now thats a Marketing Girl Boss!!

Keeping up or staying True to you? Let’s discuss!

A conversation that me and my friends have been having as of lately has been about style. Today so many trends are popping up, as fast fashion is getting faster, it’s like playing catch-up. But then don’t you think sometimes that you start to lose your sense of personal style! To be honest I think that’s what happened to me at the end of 2016. I was trying looks that I actually wouldn’t wear and it was difficult to put certain looks together.  Now I am taking it back to basics and working with what naturally is my core style and inspirational sources and iconic fashion brands that I love!

For example, Farfetch have a style guide segment on their site which talks about various different style habits and trends that refers back to adapting to your personal style. A big one for me that I have got inspiration from is ‘What To Wear With White Jeans. I LOVE wearing white. It is clean, classic and goes so well with everything. A style guide on this is a great go to help for me to style my white jeans with various looks.

Fashion is always evolving and you may not have the time or money to be trying to keep up with. This is where style comes in and using what you have to re-create amazing looks that embodies what your style is. Not what’s just hot for now!

spring double denim spring double denim spring double denim

I speak to myself here and you too, let’s bring it back to basics and build out style, so that when we look back. We will be telling our kids, look child I was so hot in my twenties, I know about fashion take a look here! That is going to be such a funny time In many years to come!
